Car Insurance Explained: Coverage Types and What You Actually Need
Liability, collision, comprehensive and the rest: what each part of a car insurance policy pays for, which ones the law or your lender requires, and how to choose limits.
- Liability coverage pays for harm you cause to other people. Nearly every state requires it, and it never pays for your own car.
- Collision and comprehensive pay for your own car. State law doesn't require them, but a lender or leasing company almost always does.

How we write about money
A guide here should leave you able to read a quote, a policy or a loan offer on your own. That shapes what we do, and what we refuse to do.
Our full method- We explain before we compare. Every guide starts with how the product works, then what to ask, and only then where to look.
- We work from primary sources. Regulators, consumer agencies and providers' own terms, each with the date we checked it.
- We don't rank products. No "best" lists and no league tables: a single label can't sum up a policy or a loan.
- We promise nothing. No savings, returns or approvals: those depend on you and on the provider.
